The United States of America has imposed sanctions on senior officials of the International Criminal Court ( ICC ), over the body’s ongoing investigation into alleged war crimes by US troops in Afghanistan.
The ICC’s Chief Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda and Phakiso Mochochoko, the head of the Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division are among those targeted by the sanctions. In June, President Donald Trump issued an executive order, blocking the assets of ICC employees and stopping them from entering the country. The senior officials will face the same sanctions.
The US State Department has also placed restrictions on the issuance of visas for staff in the ICC who are involved in “efforts to investigate US personnel”. The Gambian-born Chief Prosecutor had told the BBC in 2017, that she was “looking at allegations from all parties” in Afghanistan. US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo tagged the ICC’s investigation as “illegitimate attempts to subject Americans to its jurisdiction”. The United States has been highly critical of the court and its activities since its creation, accusing the body of being political.
