Opposition Leader and Chairman of PCRN political party Hon. Cabral Libi has called on his supporters to get ready to take part in the December 6th regional elections. The Member of Parliament whose party emerged 3rd in the 2018 Presidential elections took to twitter yesterday September 7th 2020 to express his readiness for his party to take part in the elections. The Regional elections are in theory an extension-formality of the Municipal elections. He tweeted, adding “The PCRN will gain much more than Regional Councillors, they will gain experience.
He concluded the tweet by saying his comrades should go ahead whether the Electoral College supports them or not. “Voters are first and foremost”, he said. His support for the December poll is significant given the number of parties opting to boycott the elections including the MRC and SDF due to the on-going war in the Anglophone regions and unbalanced electoral laws which favour mostly the ruling party. Cabral Libii’s remarks were quickly greeted with support and enthusiasm from the CPDM camp, as party Deputy Secretary and Minister of Labour and Social Security Gregoire Owona responded to the tweet by praising the Member of Parliament for understanding the force of Experience. He tweeted “You have understood the strength of experience…then of the expertise. Good morning Honourable”. The tweet was also shared by the nation’s broadcaster CRTV.
Libii’s tweet comes after Opposition Leader Maurice kamto threatened to topple the regime through street protest if the election date was announced. His party has set September 22nd 2020 as the day of national protest to end Biya’s 38 years reign. Government has vowed to punish any person taking part in illegal protests with MINAT’s Boss Paul Atanga Nji saying life imprisonment awaits anyone who defiles the laws or attempts to disrupt the elections. Regional elections will take place on December 6th 2020 in all divisional headquarters. Councillors across the country will vote for their regional chairman and regional councillors who will manage the different regions. CPDM presently controls almost all the councils in the country and are expected to win in all ten regions comfortably. Critics say it’s a smokescreen for Yaoundé to continue with its existing policies with different appellation just like the City Mayors.
