Minister Paul Atanga Nji restricts buying of machetes, axes, and iron rods in the North West and southwest regions. The order was issued today August 18th, 2020.
According to the MINAT boss, every person wishing to buy the aforementioned needs the following
You must obtain an authorization from the DO of your area and at the shop, you present the following;
1) Present your National ID Card
2) Present your phone number
3) present your house location
4) Present any other identification papers
5) Present proves that you have a plantation, a farmer, a butcher, a building permit…etc
Failure to do so, you would not be served.
The order also adds that any business person caught selling these goods without prior identification of the customer would be sanctioned.
The measure is expected to last for four months
According to the Minister, all those who will be caught disrespecting the above conditions would be considered as “Suspects and Potential Terrorists” and the law could follow them.
Governors have been asked to count and register all cutlasses, iron rods, and axes, in all building materials shops in the two English speaking Regions.
All those who are not in the above-mentioned positions are cautioned not to buy any of the tools, according to the press release.
The minister’s decision comes days after armed separatist fighters have regularly used machetes and axes to kill and harm their victims
