The latest snub by France Football on African Football players on their All-time Ballon D’or dream team got some big African names infuriated.
With the Ballon D’or Ceremony canceled this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the French Football Association opted to come up with three teams of 33 players who will make up the all-time France Football best players.
After noting the conspicuous absence of African Players from all three teams, Cameroonian-born striker, Samuel Eto’o Fils took to social media to criticize yet another snub by a major footballing body on Africans.
“We Africans do not exist,” Eto’o tweeted.
The snub also angered a Nigerian Journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana who questioned how France Football could come up with such a list without the inclusion of all-time African greats who have excelled in Europe.
“How is it possible that France Football chooses three teams for the Ballon d’Or and that no African player appears among the 33 players? It is not credible! Without Eto’o, without Weah, at least?” He bemoaned.
Many Africans have complained that at least George Weah, now president of Liberia, as a former Ballon D’Or holder and the only African ever to be on the list of 33.
Many have always seemed to question FIFA and France Football’s credibility when it comes to making decisions in the issuance of globally recognized awards.
It was the case in 2006 when many were of the opinion that Samuel Eto’o should have been handed his first Ballon D’Or and Africa’s second after his amazing season with FC Barcelona.
